The Changing Room 11 is committed to breaking the cycle of abuse and violence
by helping survivors overcome trauma and rebuild their lives through the transformative healing of art.
Our work draws on the remarkable capacity of Creative Art Therapy to tap into traumatic memory through all the senses, and its effectiveness to overcome anxiety, fear, self-blame, denial, and shame. Survivors work through suppressed emotions and difficult bodily sensations with Dance/Movement Therapy, releasing traumatic shock stored in the physical body, and transforming their ability to cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the after-effects of trauma.
TRAUMA GENERATES TRAUMA.
The Changing Room 11 believes through the healing of trauma, we can significantly reduce the cycles of violence and abuse in our communities.
We envision a world where survivors are empowered to overcome their trauma, breaking the cycle of abuse and freeing society from generational violence.
WHY DO WE FOCUS ON BREAKING THE CYCLE?
ONE OF THE BEST PREDICTORS OF FUTURE VICTIMIZATION
IS PAST VICTIMIZATION:
11% of assault victims suffer 25% of all assaults over a 25-year period.*
Women who experience sexual abuse are 46% more likely to be sexually assaulted again.*
Child sexual abuse victims are 3 to 5 times more likely to experience victimization as an adult than those who have not experienced any type of child abuse.*
Repeat victims suffer higher rates of mental health problems.
Sexual re-victimization is positively correlated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms, peritraumatic dissociation, and sexual preoccupation.
